Obscure Lyric for the week of May 11/09

Good morning music fans and welcome to Monday, already. I hope that you and yours had a great mothers day to celebrate or remember those who raised us and appreciate the time energy and love that was expended on our behalf.

This weeks lyric is from a solo artist who also has a gig with another band. The other band has been around for quite some time, I remember hearing one of their earlier hits on the radio years ago when I was picking fruit down in the Niagara region as a teenager. They still tour and you will know who they are, everyone does.

The song was released in 1989 and was on the third solo album by this artist. The song was not written by the artist, but the writer also performs the song in concert.

They're beating ploughshares into swords
for this tired old man that we elected king
armchair warriors often fail
and we've been poisoned by these fairy tales

I would like to know:

the name of the song:
the writer:
the singer:
the name of the band:

Have a great week, enjoy the sun and you can tell we are moving towards a long weekend, the gas prices are already going up.

Stumbled here by chance! And it's a funny, yet possibly Provident thing as well... it so happens I'm a songwriter and I was asked to write a song based on the theme "The Path is Clear" for a Christian girl's camp coming up in June.
After working on it quite a bit today I thought I should do a quick search for "The Path is Clear"-- I'm always a little worried that my lyrics will be too close to something else that's already "out there". I found a rather harsh and chaotic sounding song by "Vital Elements" that isn't anywhere NEAR what I came up with so far (thank heaven) and then I saw the link to your blog, saying something about your "obsure musical...thoughts" that you enjoy music, etc, and I wondered if you'd had a song posted called "The Path is Clear"-- then I realized it was the name of your blog. Because of the blue highlighted text on page, my eyes were automatically drawn to the lyrics of one of a song written (I believe) by one of my favorite artists, Bruce Hornsby.
The song is "End of the Innocence". It was made popular by Don Henley, but I THINK , it was actually written by Bruce. (Only because like many artists, he has a certain style that sort of comes through in most of his songs--plus, he played the piano during Henley's performance. I can usually tell when a song was written by David Foster-- Diane Warren's are often detectable with her pheneomenal and beautifully melodic modulations, etc)
So anyway-- I may have it wrong, but I'd say, in answer to your questions, in order, "End of the Innocence", Bruce Hornsby, Don Henley, and since he was on his own at the time and no longer leads for the Eagles, I'd say the "band" was Don Henley as a solo artist.
So am I pretty close?

Tracy,

the words "The path is clear" are the first four words from a song by the prog roack group Genesis, called "Firth of Fifth" a most amazing piece of work.

By the way, by responding in the comments section you gave away the answers to all who read the blog for the "obscure musical lyric" that happens every week(no worries though it's not a big deal). Feel free to check it out again as I place the "big reveal" every Friday. yes, I do this every week.

I tried to find your email but was unsuccessful, so responding in this fashion.
